Welcome to First Grade

Ms.Yvonne Benedict Mrs. Dawn Domzalski Mrs. Jacquelyn Vizza

This year, your child will experience many wonderful learning opportunities through a variety of subjects and activities.  Our Harcourt Reading series combines literature based stories with directed phonics instruction and story comprehension.  The children will be required to obtain a sight vocabulary based on literature readings and high frequency words.  As part of the reading curriculum, students will continue with the 100 Book Challenge Program where they will be given opportunities to read self selected books on their independent reading level.  Selection of the books will be completed at school and reading will be a daily homework assignment.

We are in our second year of the highly successful Kid Writing Program.  As part of the program, the children will learn to use resources available in the classroom to assist in their daily writing.  These resources include using the Word Wall, rhyming chunks, and picture charts.  The goal of the Kid Writing Program is to help children become independent writers.

Our Harcourt Math series is designed to develop critical thinking skills, basic computation, and problem solving skills.  Through the use of manipulatives and cooperative learning, students will be exposed to a variety of concepts including addition, subtraction, patterns, time, money, measurement, and geometry.

Our Social Studies and Science curriculum are composed of integrated thematic units.

Through the use of technology, Weekly Readers, fiction and non-fiction literature, experiments, and class trips, children will learn through hands-on learning opportunites.

We look forward to a wonderful year with the first graders! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.  We are always here to help. We appreciate your cooperation and support to make this a successful year.
