Welcome to Second Grade
LANGUAGE ARTS Reading, writing, spelling, and speaking all go hand in hand for your child’s development as a communicator. Our Language Arts program consists of a literature based reading series. We want to see the students evolve into fluent readers that comprehend material. Writing is an exercise that improves thinking skills, reading, and comprehension. The skills learned in the Kid Writing program from First Grade will be continued so the students can grow into creative, independent writers. English is also integrated into the program. Our goal is that the children use the appropriate grammar in speech and writing, punctuate and capitalize correctly, and learn the correct usage of homonyms, homographs, synonyms, opposites, and simple prefixes and suffixes. Our Spelling program is coordinated with our reading program. The words are chosen from stories which the children read in school. We concentrate on different phonics skills and different word groups as part of our program. 100 BOOK CHALLENGE The goal of 100 Book Challenge is for students to experience reading at their own individual level. This program is designed to be fast, fun, and easy. Our goal is to have students read for at least 45 minutes a day. MATH We expect the children to have success committing the basic addition and subtraction facts up to 20. The concept of two digit addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping, is a main focus. Telling time to five minute intervals, counting money to a dollar, measuring by the inch and centimeter, and graphing are concepts also focused on. We stress thinking skills in analysis and problem solving as well. SCIENCE We cover Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences through the study of animal categories, weather, light, sound, motion, force, ocean and beaches. We also do major units on dinosaurs and butterflies. SOCIAL STUDIES Our Social Studies program consists of units in Then and Now, Wants and Needs, and Communities. We look forward to a wonderful year with the second graders! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We are always here to help. We appreciate your cooperation and support to make this a successful year. This page last updated 10/16/2006 Chichester School District Copyright © 2003 |
