Welcome to Third Grade
We use the Harcourt Anthology Reading Series for whole group instruction. Weekly assessments test vocabulary and comprehension. Weekly spelling lists are phonics based and are related to the anthology stories. Students are taught on their instructional reading levels during Guided Reading. During this time, fiction and non-fiction trade books are used. 100 Book Challenge is the independent reading program used daily. Writing is included in all subject areas and is assessed through the writing folder. Our math curriculum uses the Harcourt Series as well as PSSA preparation materials. Some of the units we cover are multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, measurement, data, and problem solving. Through ability based grouping, students are taught these skills using small and large group instruction. Chapter tests, quizzes, and quarterly assessments measure student learning. The science units taught in third grade include plant growth and development, the solar system, rocks and minerals, animal habitats, and ecology. The Social Studies curriculum consists of people and government, landforms, and communities. Science and Social Studies are taught through hands on learning and trade books. These subjects are taught quarterly. We look forward to a wonderful year with the third graders! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We are always here to help. We appreciate your cooperation and support to make this a successful year. This page last updated 10/16/2006 Chichester School District Copyright © 2003 |
