Head Lice Information/Checklist

 Important facts to know:

1.  Head Lice do not hop, jump or have wings to fly.

2.  They are spread through direct contact with an infested person.

3.  You can get them by using combs, brushes, hats etc. of an infected person.

4.  They only live for about 24 hrs. off a human host. It is possible to get them from furniture, car seats, rugs etc.

5.  They do not live on animals. They are a human parasite only. Do not treat your pets.

6.  When treating a person with head lice please follow all the directions on the product you are using as stated on the box. Not following the directions can cause the lice to become resistant or cause harm to the treated person.

7.  The Chichester School District has a NO NIT POLICY. This means your child cannot have any nits (eggs) weather dead or alive. The school nurse must check your child before they can return to school.

8.   All parents should be checking their child/children regularly.

9.   Classrooms are checked as soon as possible once a child is sent home. There will probably be  several checks made thereafter. Checks are made periodically throughout the school year.

10. Please call your school’s nurse if you know of any problems or with any questions.

 CHECKLIST

1._____Purchase an over the counter lice treatment. Be sure to follow all directions as explained.

6._____Place stuffed animals in plastic bags if they cannot be washed or go in the dryer. Keep them bagged for at least 1-2 weeks.

7._____Remove all hair from combs and brushes and soak for several hours in solution of hot water and treatment shampoo. Better yet throw them away and replace them. Do not allow other’s to use brushes and combs.

8._____Wash all clothes that the person has been wearing or is just lying around their room.

9._____Contact the school’s nurse with any questions and if your child was absent due to head lice so that the classroom can be checked.

10.____Repeat the process listed with the exception of #1 if your child continues to show signs of nits/lice. You must continue to retreat bedding etc. or the head lice will not go away.

11.____Remember to bring your child to the nurse to be rechecked before being permitted back in class. It  is part of our policy that you accompany your child to the nurse.
